EMAS – Community Eco-Management and Audit Scheme

In September 1996, Pego Power Station received a recommendation to register in the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) by the Environmental accreditation body, Lloyd s Register Quality Assurance. However, it was not until 1999 that the General Directorate for the Environment was nominated as the authoritive body in Portugal for the registration of industrial installations to the EMAS scheme. Therefore it was in May 2000 that Pego Power Station was registered with the number P-S-0001, signifying that it was the first organisation in Portugal to receive this certification.
The EMAS registration indicates that the installation possesses an environmental management system which meets EMAS requirements, in addition to the applicable environmental legislation.
As described with the EMAS symbol in our 2004 Environmental Summary:
"The Pego Thermal Power Plant has an Environmental Management system promoting the continuous improvement in its environmental performance. The organisation publishes an Environmental Declaration validated by an accredited certification body and, is authorised to use the EMAS Logo"

ISO14001:2004

In January 1997 Pego became the first power station in Portugal to receive accreditation to the international standard for Environmental Management Systems ISO EN 14001.
The Certification Body was Lloyd s Register Quality Assurance.
As with the EMAS registration above, ISO EN 14001 certification confirms that the Pego Power Plant meets the requirements of the standard for Environmental Management System (EMS) applicable to:
"Industrial and local activities including, and associated with, the production of electricity from fossil fuel combustion and corresponding sale and deposition of ash."
